Description: John Chyz from Affiliated Engineers, Inc., Chris Kreifels from Skanska and Chris Qualle from FLAD architects will be presenting the University of Florida Health Heart Vascular and Neuroscience hospital - the first 4 Green Globes certified hospital in the United States. Progressive design has been coupled with sustainable initiatives to provide a healing environment for patients and supportive spaces for staff to provide excellent care. Creative use of sustainable features shall include information on the envelope, as well as the unique integrated design and collaboration strategies used to reach the 4 Green Globes certification for the hospital.

Learning Objectives:

1. Provide background on the Green Globes Rating System.

2. Provide the main sustainability achievements to reach the 4 Green Globe Rating and compliance examples that creatively met sustainable criteria.

3. Highlight unique design-assist approach opportunities that resulted in high performance delivery.

4. Describe intelligent construction risk management strategies for building envelope systems.

5. Elaborate on the challenges associated with designing and delivering a sustainable hospital.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Day 2 Kick off & Morning Welcome:

Speaker: Philip McKay, CEO, nGage Events

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

General Session Presentation: Sustainability Trends

Introduction: Jane Rohde, CHID, ACHA, AIA, FIIDA, ASID, LEED AP BD+C & GGA-EB, Principal, JSR Associates, Inc.

Speaker: Blake Jackson, AIA, LEED/WELL FACULTY, FITWEL AMBASSADOR, Sustainability Design Leader, Stantec Architecture & Engineering

Description: This presentation includes a glimpse into the future of sustainability and relevant trends impacting the design and construction marketplace.  As sustainability criteria is being codified, there is more competition among the rating system offerings, clients are selecting health and wellness certification programs over green building certification programs, and performance criteria is advancing the need to address climate changes and resilience - how are all these impacting the design of the built environment in the next 10  to 20 years? This session will cover the trends and project examples that reflect the current and future state of high performance building design.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the current state of sustainability in the design and construction fields.

2. Understand what sustainability criteria is being codified.

3. Understand the utilization of health and wellness versus green building certification rating systems.

4. Understand the future impacts of climate change and need for resilience.

9:15 AM - 10:05 AM

Boardroom Presentations

Description: 25 minute Supplier Use Case Boardroom Presentations

10:20 AM - 11:20 AM

General Session Presentation: BEES, BIRDS, & NEST – Product Life Cycle Tool & Building Life Cycle Tool

Introduction: Jane Rohde, CHID, ACHA, AIA, FIIDA, ASID, LEED AP BD+C & GGA-EB, Principal, JSR Associates, Inc.

Title: BEES, BIRDS, & NEST – Product Life Cycle Tool & Building Life Cycle Tool

Speaker: Joshua Kneifel, Ph.D, Research Economist, Applied Economics Office of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) of The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Description: Dr. Kneifel will discuss NIST’s work in quantifying sustainability performance of buildings. The presentation will provide an overview of the methodology, criteria, and data used in NIST’s sustainable building evaluation. Additionally, Dr. Kneifel will discuss the software tools that NIST has developed to assist architects, designers, acquisitions, and policymakers in making more sustainable building decisions, including the BEES software for comparing building products and BIRDS and BIRDS NEST for comparing whole building designs.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn the different criteria NIST currently includes in evaluating sustainability performance of buildings.

2. Learn the methods used by NIST to evaluate each criteria of sustainability performance of buildings.

3. Learn how NIST’s BEES software tool can be used to evaluate building products based on their sustainability performance.

4. Learn how NIST’s BIRDS and BIRDS NEST software tools can be used to evaluate energy efficiency impacts on the sustainability performance of whole building design designs.

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Networking Lunch

12:40 PM - 1:40 PM

General Session: Commissioning of MEP & Building Envelope

Introduction: Jane Rohde, CHID, ACHA, AIA, FIIDA, ASID, LEED AP BD+C & GGA-EB, Principal, JSR Associates, Inc.

Speakers: Mark Gelfo, PE, LEED Fellow, CxA, EMP, TLC Engineering for Architecture | Darek Brandt, Chief Engineer of Building Science Division at Intertek, Professional Industries, Inc. (PSI)

Description: This presentation will include case study examples of positive outcomes from the completion of commissioning mechanical systems and the building envelope collectively. The speakers will provide their experience and lessons learned from various projects – providing the attendees with background, steps taken, timeframes for collecting data, and the outcomes. Based upon these outcomes, the presentation will provide the updates that are then recommended for continuous improvement and how the information informs future design work.

Learning Objectives:
